In many places in the third world water is in abundance but is found below 200 ft (60m). Now most people would not think that 200 ft is a problem. However existing manual pumping systems are not capable of lifting water from depths of 200 ft or greater meaning that if power is not available, this water is not available. When clean underground water is not available then the population has to rely on surface water which may or may not be present year round and may or may not be sanitary when it is available. Remember 3.4 million people die each year from some form of water borne illnesses! Therefore is critical that when water is found at depths greater than 200 ft it be made available to the local population.
